1. A herd of 100 caribou was moved to a new location. The population increased by 10% the first year and then increased by 20% the second year.

A. Find the population after the second year.

FIRST YEAR

First find the 10% of 100.

100 divided by 10= 10

the 10% of 100 is 10

then add 10 to 100.

100+10=110

SECOND YEAR

Find the 20% of 110.

110 divided by 10=11

then multiply it by 2

11 x 2= 22

the 20% of 110 is 22

then add 22 to 110

110+22= 132

The population after two years is 132 caribou.

B. Explain why there was not a 30% increase in population over two years.

The increase is not 30% because the 20% increase in the second year is based on the new population after 10% increase in the first year.

2. Chris purchased the following items:

• 2 binders at $4.99 each
• 1 math set for $3.99
• a backpack for $19.99

Find the total cost including 5% GST and 7% PST.

2 binders 4.99 x 2= 9.98

$9.99

9.99 + 3.99 + 19.99 = 33.97

$34

34 x 1.12 = 38.08

$38.99

The total cost including the 12% of taxes is $38.99

3. A store discounted items by 50% off the original price one week. The following week an additional 10% was taken off the already reduced price. The regular price of a CD player was $85.00. What is the reduced price in the second week.

CD $85.00

1st week 50% off

85 divided by 2 equals $42.50

2nd week 10% of the already reduced price

42.50 divided by 10 equals $4.25

42.50 - 4.25 = $38.25

The reduced price in the second week is $4.25
