Kit's Proportion Post

Ratio- A ratio is a comparison of quantities that have the same units. These are some ways of writing them.
Words: one compared to two or 1 to 2
Ratio Notation: 1:2
Fraction: 1/2

Rate- A rate is a comparison of two quantities measured in different units. It can be expressed as a fraction, but cannot be expressed as a percent.

Ex: 5 apples/hour

Proportion- A proportion states that two ratios are equal.

Ex: 2/4 = 3/6

  • As a playgroup worker, if I increase the amount of apple juice I am serving at the playgroup from 25 ml to 100 ml, how much should I increase the the orange juice to, to keep the quantities in the same proportion? The orange juice is 50 ml to start with.
