Kit's Proportion Post

Ratio- A ratio is a comparison of quantities that have the same units. These are some ways of writing them.
Words: one compared to two or 1 to 2
Ratio Notation: 1:2
Fraction: 1/2

Rate- A rate is a comparison of two quantities measured in different units. It can be expressed as a fraction, but cannot be expressed as a percent.

Ex: 5 apples/hour

Proportion- A proportion states that two ratios are equal.

Ex: 2/4 = 3/6

  • 5 hours to travel 360 miles is about _____mph.
  • As a playgroup worker, if I increase the amount of apple juice I am serving at the playgroup from 25 ml to 100 ml, how much should I increase the the orange juice to, to keep the quantities in the same proportion? The orange juice is 50 ml to start with.

3/4 = 12/16
4/9 = 16/32

  1. No
  2. No, it's not fair because he only stole $100 and he surrendered to the police. While the EX-Mortgage CEO stole $3 billion and he only gets 40 months in jail.
  3. If I was the judge, I would send the CEO 180 months in jail and the poor man 2 years in jail.
