1. Answer in a short paragraph and with diagrams

The Pythagorean Relationship is the relationship between the lengths of the sides of a right triangle. The sum of the areas of the squares attached to the legs of the right triangle equals the area of the square attached the hypotenuse.

2. Solve for the missing side length.

3. Is this a right triangle? Prove it!!!

We Day

We Day is an annual event organized by the charity, Free The Children. The first We Day in Winnipeg happened on November 23, 2011. 16000 people attended this event at the MTS center to celebrate the achievements of those who have made a difference and made the global community better. It was an event the has empowered the youth to be the change they want to see in the world. It was such a huge honor to go to We Day. It was very inspiring and fun. It was one of the most memorable and best experience ever. I will never forget We Day. There were a lot of wonderful and inspiring speakers like, Marc and Craig Kielburger, Spencer West, Michel Chikwanine, Al Gore, Paul Martin, Mia Farrow, Rick Hansen, Hannah Taylor and many, many more. They each told us their "we story" and their experiences of changing the world.

One of the many speakers that really captured my attention was Michel Chikwanine and his story. He told us his "we story" not by speaking but by placards. He is taking "The Vow of Silence" for those who's freedom and rights have been taken away. For the children who's lives are the complete opposite of ours. For the children who's right to an education and childhood is taken away. On November 30, 2011, 24 hours of silence in solidarity with children who are being silenced by poverty and exploitation. Michel is a former child soldier. When Michel Chikwanine was 5 years old, he was kidnapped and drugged. He was given a gun and was forced to kill his own best friend, Kevin.

Spencer West was another speaker. At the age of 5 he lost his legs due to genetic disease. Spencer was bullied and was told he would never be a functioning member of society. He was told it would be impossible to live a normal life, considering he couldn't do something as simple as stand up straight or kick a ball. They were wrong. Spencer is respected, known, valued and loved. He is always standing tall. He overcame the bullying and his disability. He spoke about how he never lost hope and courage.
"Redefine Possible" -Spence West

Another speaker is Rick Hansen. He suffers from spinal cord injury waist down because of a car crash at age 15. He overcame his disability and proved he can achieve his dream. Rick is best known for his Man In Motion World Tour, where he traveled the world in his wheelchair. Rick did not give up on hope, he did many things that anyone can do, including bungee jumping, except he did it in a wheelchair.
"If enough of us choose to change even one small thing, together we have the power to change anything." -Rick Hansen

All the amazing, inspiring, and wonderful speakers at We Day really encouraged all of us to make a difference.
Throughout the day, we kept repeating two words, "WE ARE!!" It was a respond to many questions like, "Who is willing to make a difference?" "who is the change?".
If it wasn't for Craig Kielburger starting the Free The Children campaign and for those who stood with/by him, there wouldn't be a We Day.

WE DAY - THE POWER OF WE
"Never Underestimate the Power of WE"
"We day is more than a one day event. It launches a year long series of actions to better our global community"
"Be the change you want to see in the world" -Gandhi

Big thank you to everyone who helped to make this amazing event possible for us.

Hannah's Pay It Forward

Pay It Forward
Part 1
Pay It Forward is a powerful and inspiring movie that we, grades 8's watched. Pay it forward is about a young boy named Trevor McKinney, his social studies teacher, Mr.Simonet, gives the class an assignment to come up with a plan that will change the world. Trevor comes up with the plan to "pay it forward" by doing good deeds for 3 people, and instead of asking for anything in return he asks each of them to "pay the favor forward" by doing good deeds for 3 other people and in a matter of time, it should become bigger and bigger.
"You see, I do something real good for three people. And then when they ask how they can pay it back, I say they have to Pay It Forward...to three more people. Each. So, nine people get helped. Then those people have to do twenty-seven." He turned on the calculator, punched in a few numbers. "Then it sort of spreads out, see, to eighty-one, then two hundred forty-three, then seven hundred twenty-nine, then two thousand, one hundred eighty-seven. See how big it gets?" - Trevor McKinney
To me, "Pay it forward " means it doesn't matter who you are, or where you are, you can always do something to change someones life.

Our Act Of Kindness
Part 2
Our act of kindness was to go to a seniors home and spend a day with an elder. We did this because, we knew that it would be something other people wouldn't think of doing, most people want to donate or volunteer, I mean, don't get me wrong, that's amazing and it would make a big difference but, we wanted to help an elder and get a nice big smile in return. We also wanted to ask the elders questions and see things from there point of view. We helped Carol Stuart. She has lived at the seniors home for about 9 years. We spent a day with her and got to know her. We did our act of kindness on November 13, 2011.

Part 3
Our act of kindness went great. We spent 6 hours with Carol (6am-12noon). Before going to the seniors home, we bought Carol a fruit basket. First thing we did was get to know each other and interviewed her about herself and about society, we wanted to see things from her point of view. We then baked cookies and biscuits, they were delicious! (we supplied all the baking needs) She then told us about her past. At 2:00 pm, we went out to buy her some roses and a card, to thank her for the wonderful day. She taught my partner and I, a lesson. Her lesson was "even if you're just a kid, if you believe, you can make a difference" . When we asked Carol about world poverty, she had an amazing answer. "There shouldn't be a reason for us to be in such a mess. There's just too much giving away, this war was silly. I think we're spending millions of dollars for wars, where as we got people in the streets starving" I definitely agree with Carol's statement because, if we can afford war, then we can afford to feed the hunger. At first, it felt awkward to interview someone we barely knew, but as time passed by, we felt as if we've known her forever. I think Carol's reaction was happy, we really enjoyed the day we spent with her. We told her about the "Pay it Forward" project we were doing and she believed that it would work and she would love to be part of it. She accepted our invitation to interview her and told us she was going to tell all her friends about it!

The Importance Of "Pay It Forward"
Part 4
Pay It Forward is important because not a lot of people do it, and they don't notice how easy it is. Giving compliments are not that hard, yet it can make anyone smile. Being sick doesn't just mean physically sick, but there's people in the world who are also emotionally sick, like some people are depressed, giving them greeting card wouldn't hurt would it? By doing that you can help them believe in their self. Pay It Forward doesn't have to big and beyond to make a difference, it can be small, and it can count a lot to some people. Our act of kindness definitely made a difference because we helped her have some fun and managed to put a smile on her face. We realize that others do want to help, they just might now know how to start, but just like what Carol had said " I think you have to believe. I think that's the biggest thing" .

Hannah's Graphing Post

1. Types Of Graphs

Bar Graph
advantage: Best for comparing data across categories.
disadvantage: Depending on the scale or interval, the exact number is not clear or could be difficult to identify.

Double Bar Graph
advantage: Best for comparing two sets of data across categories.
disadvantage: If a double bar graph has too many series of data, it can be confusing to read and depending on the scale or interval, the exact number is not clear.

Circle Graph
advantage: Best for comparing categories to the whole using percents. The sum of the percents in a circle graph is 100%.
disadvantage: Difficult to understand without labels and you must perform calculations to determine of each category. It will be difficult to read and label if there is a lot of series of data.

Line Graph
advantage: Best for showing changes in data over time. Line graph shows you a trend.
disadvantage: Just like a bar graph and double bar graph, depending on the scale or interval the exact number is not clear.

Pictographs
advantage: Best for comparing data that can be easily counted and represented using symbols.
disadvantage: Hard to find the exact amount of partial symbols.

2. Misleading Graphs

Example 1: Distorting the scale (putting a break in the y-axis)

Example 2: Distorting the visuals (making a symbol appear larger than the others)

Example 3: Distorting the size of bars (making a bar wider or in other words adding more area inside a bar, or making a bar appear 3D)

3.
a) The following chart shows Pizza Sub Sales over a month. What 2 graphs would show the information accurately?

A line graph and a bar graph would show the information accurately.

b) If you were selling Pizza Subs would you continue? How does your graph explain your answer.

I would continue selling Pizza Subs because the items sold each week is increasing. Using a line graph, it would show changes in the data over time and the trend would be going up.

4. Below you see 2 different examples of graphs showing healthy choices sold at the canteen. If you had to convince Mrs. Mota that we should continue selling healthy choices which graph would you choose?

If I had to convince Mrs.Mota that we should continue selling healthy choices, I would choose the line graph because it clearly shows that the trend is increasing.

a) Change each graph so that your information looks even MORE impressive. You may not change the data just the graphs.

Here is a game/link to practice Bar Graphs.

Hannah's Proportion Post

Task1)
Define:
Ratio - A comparison of quantities that have the same units.

It can be shown in 3 different ways; black balls to white balls
3/6 ; 3:6 ; 3 to 9

Rate - A comparison of two quantities measured in different units.
ex: Harry skateboarded for 25 km in 2 hours. Zayn skateboarded for 45 km in 3 hours. Who is faster?

Proportion - An equation which states that two ratios are equal. It has 2 equivalent fractions (rations)

Task2)
1) 5 hours to travel 360 miles is about_____ mph

2)As a playgroup worker, if I increase the amount of apple juice I am serving at the playgroup from 25 ml to 100 ml, how much should I increase the the orange juice to, to keep the quantities in the same proportion? The orange juice is 50 ml to start with.
Answer: 200ml

Task3)
What are the three ways you can prove that equivalent ratio statements are true?
3/4 = 12/16 or 4/9 = 16/32

Task4)

Task5)

1. Does it seem fair?
No, I really don't this this is fair at all!

2.
With what you know about proportion look and read what is in the image above. Does it seem just and fair? Why have you made this choice?
I really don't think this is fair at all because the CEO who made a $3 billion fraud was sentenced for only 40 months in prison. If "it was the biggest corporate fraud in U.S. history" why should he only be sentenced for 40 months? Then, the fact that a homeless man who stole a $100 bill just to survive, but surrenders himself is sentenced for 15 years in prison! This is not fair at all. Society is so unfair, it is just ridiculous.
3.What would you have done if you were the judge?
If I was the judge, I would have sentenced the homeless man 1 month in prison. For the CEO, 15 years in prison, or something a long those lines.
