Pythagorean Relationship Scribe

1. Pythagorean Relationship -the relationship between the lengths of the two sides of a right triangle. Or the sum of the two areas of the squares attached to the legs of the right triangle equal the area of the square attached to the hypotenuse.

Textbook Questions 14, 15, and 17

14. Alex is thinking of a number. The number has a square root between 7 and 8, and a multiple of 12.

a) What number could he be thinking of?

b) Is there more than one answer? Explain.
No, because 60 is the only number that is between the square root of 7 and 8 that is a multiple of 12.

15. Order the following numbers from least to greatest:

Ordered from least to greatest:

17. Carmel wants to mount an 18cm x 18cm square picture on a square board that is four times the area or the picture

a) What is the area of the picture?

324cm(squared)

b) What is the area of the board?

I got this answer because I multiplied 324cm(squared) by 4.

c) What are the dimensions of the board?

Here's a video that can help.

Madeline's Pay it Forward

Part 1:
On October 31st 2011, all of the grade 8's watched the movie "Pay it Forward." It is the kind of movie that touches people's hearts in a way that makes people think twice about their actions. It also tells you that, old or young your age doesn't matter when making a difference. We don't need someone to tell us to "Pay it Forward," we can just act by ourselves.

Part 2:

My group Shera, Jenny, Sarissa and I went to the Ronald McDonald House for our Pay it Forward act of kindness. We choose this activity because we wanted to make a difference in the lives of children that are fighting a life threatening disease. We helped the children in the Ronald McDonald McDonald house. We went there Monday after school on November 14 2011.

Part 3:

Our act of kindness went very well! Kerry was the one who showed us around the house, so we know where the different activities happens. We felt very welcome to the place. She welcomed us warmly and was very kind. We got the privilege to sign the guest book and wrote "Pay it Forward" under our names and wrote it on the tags that we tied onto the treat bags that we gave them. Kerry was delighted that we chose them for our Pay it Forward project. They reacted by telling us that we are doing a good thing for our project. We had such a great time while being toured around and just being there at the Ronald McDonald House.

Part 4:

It's important because it makes us think of others instead of just thinking about ourselves. We aren't too sure if our act of kindness made a difference to the children we helped because they were at the hospital when we went there. We hope we did made a big differece to their lives. One difference we made was towards Kerry because she was touched of what we did, she even told us that we were doing a very nice thing.

Madeline's Graphing Post

Types of Graphs:

  1. Bar Graphs
Advantages:

  • visually strong

  • can easily compare two or three data set

Disadvantages:

  • graph categories can be reordered to emphasize certain effects

2. Double Bar Graph

Advantages:

  • it's good for comparing two sets of data, to see the difference of the two data
Disadvantages:

  • the intervals can be hard to find where the exact bar is

3. Line/double line graph

Advantages:

  • is best for showing data overtime

  • also good for finding the trend

Disadvantages:

  • depending on the interval, finding the exact data can be difficult unless it is shown

4. Circle Graph

Advantages:

  • visually appealing

  • shows percent of total for each category

Disadvantages:

  • no exact numerical data

  • hard to compare two sets of data

  • the "other" category can be a problem

  • total unknown unless specified

  • best for 3-7 categories

  • use only with discrete data

5. Pictograph

Advantages:

  • easy to read

  • visually appealing

  • handles large data sets easily using keyed icons
Disadvantages:

  • hard to quantify partial icons

  • icons must be of consistent size

  • best for only 2-6 categories

  • very simplistic

Distorting the Graphs:

  1. Distorting the scale - a break in the y-axis - can be showed as:

  2. Distorting the visual(pictograph)

  3. Distorting the size of the bars

Questions:

2. a) A bar graph and a line graph can show the data more accurately.

b) Yes, I would continue because the sales go up each week and both graphs show a trend.

4. I would choose the line graph because it shows the trend increasing.

Madeline's Proportion Post

Ratio - a comparison of two quantities that have the same unit of measure.

eg.

5 marbles : 8 total oooooooo

Rate - a comparison of two quantities measured in different units.

Proportions - an equation that which states that two ratios has two equivalent fractions (ratios).

eg.

1. 5 hours to travel 360 miles is about 72 miles mph.

2. As a playgroup worker, if I increase the amount of apple juice I am serving at the playgroup from 25 ml to 100 ml, how much should I increase the the orange juice to, to keep the quantities in the same proportion? The orange juice is 50 ml to start with.

3/4 = 12/16 is true because...

4/9 = 16/32 is false because...

1. Does this seem fair? No, I don't think it is fair.

2. Does it seem just and fair? Why have you made this choice?

No, I don't think it is fair, because the first man stole way more money than Roy Brown and he felt guilty and turned himself in, while Paul Allen didn't.

3. What would you have done if you were the judge?

I would have let Roy Brown go or give him 5 months in jail.
