This is a fun video, I think. Props to his ukulele. haha

This explains the surface area of the cylinder.

Pythagorean Relationship

The Pythagorean relationship is the relationship between the side lengths of a right triangle. It states that both areas of the legs are going to be the same value of the hypotenuse

Finding the missing side length.
Is this a right triangle?
No, it's not a right triangle because the legs don't equal the hypotenuse.

Chapter 3 Section 3.1 80-87

#4 How is squaring a number reverse of finding a square root?
It's the reverse because you can find both answers even though you have 1 question.

#9 What is the area of the square with each side length?
a) 10
10 x 10 = 100 square units
b) 16
16 x 16 = 289 square units

#10 Determine the area of a square with each side length?
a) 9 squared = 81 square units
b) 11 squared = 121 square units

#15b Square root of 64 = 8

#16b Square root of 25 = 5

#18 A floor mat for gymnastics with a side length of 14 m. What is the area of the floor mat in square meters?

14 x 14 = 196  squared meters

#21 Kate is going to put a patio in her backyard. The patio stones she is using each have an area of 1 squared meters.
a) Area of the patio:  14 x 4 = 56 squared meters
b) Different dimensions with same area: 2 m by 28m
c) Is it possible it could be a square with whole side lengths  and same area?
No, because it's not a perfect square.

Kit's Scribe - Percents

Homework:
Math Links 8 Chapter 4 Section 4.1 pg.128-129 #4-16
Click the word link to go to the online textbook

The questions I did were 4, 6, 8, 13.

a) 3 hundred grids are needed because it's exact.
b) 5 hundred grids are needed because 466% is more than 400% and less than 500%
c) 12 hundred grids are needed because it's exact.

Here is a video to help you with Percentage word problems.
Here are also some links.

Please give me feedback on this :) Thanks for reading my post.

Kit's Pay it forward

What is Pay it forward?

Pay it forward is when you do a random act of kindness to anyone, without expecting any rewards. The people I help will or might continue to do it for other people. The people who are reminded about the generosity will continue and the cycle goes on and on.

My act of kindness is volunteering at Winnipeg Harvest and helping my friends clean my neighbor's yards. Three of them in total. I chose these activities because Harvest helped my family when we were short of food and I helped my friends because they needed me and I said yes. For Harvest, I helped people who are in need of food because if it weren't for the volunteers there would be no Winnipeg Harvest. For yard cleaning, we helped people by cleaning their yards because a clean front yard will be good for the neighborhood, prevents sewer problems, provides clear mind and save the environment. I did both of these activities on November 12, 2011.

My act of kindness went very well. I felt happy to help because I want to stop poverty in Manitoba. I think they were surprised of how many people there were to volunteer because there were a lot of us. It was really fun because I hanged out with Mary, Aicelle, and Abby during the tour. I did not ask Winnipeg Harvest to pay it forward because they are already giving food to people who are in need of it. For cleaning the yards of people, it was fun because I got to help my friends and I also got to help keep our community clean.

The idea of Pay It Forward is important because it's always a good thing to help people in need. eg.)A man from Winnipeg helped two motorist that needed a tire change. After helping, he left and a few minutes later he got a heart attack. Those two motorists who he helped saw him and performed CPR. He survived because of those two motorists.
My act of kindness did make a difference.

Kit's Graphing Post

1)Data can be presented using bar graphs, circle graphs, line graphs and pictographs. Different graphs may provide different information and display certain types of data better.

Bar Graphs are best for comparing data across categories.
Advantages: Shows the largest and smallest easier.
Disadvantages: If it's close, you can't really compare.

Double Bar Graphs are best for comparing 2 sets of data across categories.
Advantages: Shows two sets of data.
Disadvantages: You can only do two sets of data.

Circle Graphs are best for comparing categories to the whole using percents. The sum of the percents in a circle graph is 100%.
Advantages: Compares part to whole.
Disadvantages:It's too much hard work trying to mark the central point.

Line Graphs are best for showing changes in data over time.
Advantages: Compares data over time/trend.
Disadvantages: It only shows trends.

Pictographs are best for comparing data that can be easily counted and represented using symbols.
Advantages: Like a bar graph, it can show the biggest and smallest without looking for the numbers.
Disadvantages: Not accurate especially with quarters.

2)Graphs could be misleading by 3 ways. The 3 ways are:
  1. Distorting the scale. (Break in the y-axis)
  2. Distorting the size of the visuals. (Pictographs only)
  3. Distorting the size of the bars. (Make a bar wider)

2a)The 2 graphs that would show how many pizza subs sales accurately are the line graph and the bar graph.
2b)I would keep selling the pizza subs because the trend is going higher each week. It shows a trend.

4)
I would pick the line graph because it shows the trend of sales of healthy good choices going up or down.
4a)

Kit's Proportion Post

Ratio- A ratio is a comparison of quantities that have the same units. These are some ways of writing them.
Words: one compared to two or 1 to 2
Ratio Notation: 1:2
Fraction: 1/2

Rate- A rate is a comparison of two quantities measured in different units. It can be expressed as a fraction, but cannot be expressed as a percent.

Ex: 5 apples/hour

Proportion- A proportion states that two ratios are equal.

Ex: 2/4 = 3/6

TASK 2
  • 5 hours to travel 360 miles is about _____mph.
  • As a playgroup worker, if I increase the amount of apple juice I am serving at the playgroup from 25 ml to 100 ml, how much should I increase the the orange juice to, to keep the quantities in the same proportion? The orange juice is 50 ml to start with.
TASK 3

3/4 = 12/16
4/9 = 16/32
TASK 4

TASK 5

  1. No
  2. No, it's not fair because he only stole $100 and he surrendered to the police. While the EX-Mortgage CEO stole $3 billion and he only gets 40 months in jail.
  3. If I was the judge, I would send the CEO 180 months in jail and the poor man 2 years in jail.
